After checking out numerous local mechanics and "specialists", I bit the bullet and took my '05 Girly to my local Triumph dealer for her 24K service, in the belief that, as they were a solus Triumph dealer, who I bought the bike from in 2008, they'd be more likely to do a decent job.

I'd already done all the bits that I could do myself, so they were asked to do a basic engine service. This was itemised as valve check and adjust (if needed), air and fuel filters, coolant change, new plugs and throttle body balance/diagnostic check etc.

I took her in on the Tuesday late afternoon, they did the work Wednesday/Thursday and I collected her on the Saturday morning. As soon as the guy ran her round from the workshop, I could hear that not all was well. It sounded a little like she was running on two cylinders but he assured me all was okay. When I took her home I noticed that she felt smoother than before but there was little or no oooomph when opening the throttle. The tickover remained steady but just sounded arrythmic and odd. I also noticed that she was fluffy on small throttle openings and reluctant to start once fully warmed up. There was also a strong smell of unburnt fuel when she did eventually fire up, which continued whilst she was ticking over.

Being thoroughly hacked off at this, I took her straight back to the dealer and explained the problems to the service manager, who to be fair, responded immediately and took her out for a road test. He came back and again suggested that everything was okay. I firmly reiterated that it was not okay and had to repeat what I felt was wrong. Despite not appearing to have any idea as to what I was takling about, he took my bike back to the workshops and suggested that I talk to the "service technician".
The technician also stated that the bike had been set up properly and suggested that it was the aftermarket silencer can that was making it sound odd. After I told him that it sounded fine with the same can on, before he'd put his mitts on it and that I was not a fucking idiot that had fallen to earth with that mornings rain, he got the hint as to the depth of my displeasure and agreed to re-check his work.

They will now have my Tigger until mid next week, as their "existing commitments" meant that they couldn't sort it on the day. To be fair to the dealer, they have loaned me a Bonnie (soooooo tiny in comparison) in the interim but for the best part of £400, I believe I am entiled to better service and not be treated like a mechanically ignorant buffoon. Rant over........for now at least!

That's why lots of us do our own work, good luck sorting it.

Sorry to hear, hope they get it sorted for you, and kick in some extra Triumph goodies for your trouble.....maybe a coffee mug or SOMETHING....

You are not a million miles from me, if you ever want a hand with anything.

My experiences with stealers are far from perfect. I will never use one again of I can help it.

The things that happened to me include incorrect tyre pressures when they state in the paperwork they were correct, to oil all down the paintwork and lubing the chain when there is a freshly fitted scotoiler.... All basic stuff...

Collected my Tigger from the dealer this afternoon and i'm happy to say its now fine. The technician said that the stepper motor needed cleaning and lubing, as it was sticking. He also lowered the tickover speed as well, as it was running a bit high.

Took it out for a good run, whilst taking the scenic route home and she now pulls like a train and feels smoother than an oiled snake. Roll on some decent weather!

Or didnt they sit the air box back correctly? That was my concern when I was rebuilding.

Thanks for all the support and suggestions you guys, it's much appreciated.
Having persused this site for some time now, I'd had enough information to query whether the technician had seated the air filter box correctly, as well as the stepper motor gasket or the vacuum hoses off it. I did get the impression that my questioning him in this way didn't sit well with him but that's his problem, not mine.
As for using WD40 to lube the stepper motor, I can only hope that the fact that it rots the seal is one that he's aware of. Alas, only time will tell if he wasn't.

It's not so much rotting anything, it dries slightly sticky, attracts dirt and generally gums up the works.

Took my Girly back to the dealers yesterday, so that they could try to sort out the problems it now has, since they "serviced" it nearly three weeks ago. I then phoned them this evening to see if it was fixed, only to hear them tell me that they'd had to send the ECU/diagnostic readings off to Triumph H.Q's tecnical bods, as they didn't know if they were within normal specs or not.

Being utterly taken aback by this, I enquired as to why they didn't know, given that they're a solus Triumph dealership. They then said "it's an obsolete bike and our current technicians haven't been fully trained to service them". WHATTT!!!

Eureka...... this would explain why my seven year old, "obsolete" bike was now running worse than before they bloody serviced it! I suggested that they may like to consider refunding me part of the £400 they originally charged me, given that their technician doesn't have the relevant expertise to do the job properly.

Anyhow..........may get it back tomorrow and hopefully, it'll be properly fixed.

Sheesh ...

I am interested to see the outcome.

Have a read here mate, it may shed some light....

See especially half way down page 2.  I can't say the dealer's still a dick as the general manager and the service manager both left soon after my letter (and I'm definitely not claiming that the two situations are related) and I've not let them near my bike since.

I did that about a (now defunct) local dealer and just received an anodyne letter thanking me for my interest.
