Looking at my stock mufflers more closely today, I noticed the built in heat shields which provide about a one inch air gap above the muffler proper. Am I correct in thinking soft luggage laying on these won't burn up or melt? Also, I looked at the gallery and found pictures of parts. Where are all the shots of steamers and the different set ups people have?

I've done it without any visible heart damage, even in the tropics. I think so long as you keep the top and bottom of the heat shield clear to allow some air flow you should be OK.
I used to have long hair, took acid and went to hip joints. Now I long for hair, take antacid and need a new hip joint

Thanks! Sounds like a plan.
