Cam Chain Tensioner - 885i

Anyone have a feel for the life of a cam chain tensioner on a 885i?  My engine makes a clunking noise for awhile on first start when the OAT is cool.  Disappears after it has gotten really warm.  Or would that just be the lack of oil in the cam area from sitting?

Worthwhile to check the tensioner or replace it at 36000 mile check?

My bike has 36000 and I am planning on having the valves checked soon.  Don't know when or if that has ever been done.  Bought the bike with 28,000 and previous owner did not have it done but did not know if 12000 mile check had been performed  since he was third owner.

Thanks.
