cam cover gasket

I ordered a new one, but am having trouble reinstalling the cam cover.  Is it easier to place the gasket on the engine, and then place the cam cover on?  Or should I fir the gasket into the cam cover and then placing it.  I've done it 3 times no, and ever time, it leaks like a sieve.

Also, that gasket is up to $53 now!

I had to use sealant with mine, not much just a bit round the semi circular parts at the end.
