Found the old Tank Cover in the cupboard and thought, "This should be easy, its been on a bike before".

Obviously 5 Years had shrunk it back to new, Its on, but jeez was it a struggle, maybe should have waited until warmer weather, or used the heat gun. Now only thing I might do is dye the silver stripes to black to match the earlier spoke wheel colouring, must be vinyl dye/paint of some sort?

Most good cobblers sell leather dye, not sure how it'll work on vynl although the bagster is soft so it might work.  Like anything, if you can't get a definite steer, experiment on something that doesn't matter till you get it right.  You don't want your Girly to look like a dumped girlfriend's mascara first time it rains....

I've had vinyl dyed before on a car and it worked well. I didn't do it myself, took it to a specialist restorer (not your more common "recovering" shop) who had the vinyl specific cleaners, dyes and fixers. It's not as straight forward to do properly as some ads might have you believe.

It's more likely that your tank has increased in size due to the Ethanol in our fuel these days. Mine has certainly grown. I had to lengthen the large slot for the front mounting last time I had the tank off.

Does that mean I can get more petrol in?    Seriously, the guys I bought the bike off were telling me the way to avoid the stripes bubbling on the tank is to keep the tank full? They were saying its the fumes from the petrol that leech through. I checked it wasnt April 1st, but dunno if that sounds plausible or not.

My personal experience with 2 nylon tanks (1 Girly) and more than a decade of ethanol in the pumps in California:  water is "pushed" (wrong word, there's not really a repulsive force, there's simply a lack of attraction that allows the diffusion of water) by the ethanol and migrates through the nylon matrix of the tank, and is stopped at the decal and/or clear coat, causing-the bubble(s).

I've successfully used an epoxy sealer on both tanks.  I can't intuit  how keeping the tank full would stop the process, maybe others can chime in. 

Gas stabilizer is a preventative, too.  I have also had the tank deformation, but it has returned to "normal" after drying the tank out prior to using the epoxy/sealer.

Now, the "other" deformation involved is clearly from too much beer, but I can't dry out long enough to get that back to "normal".  YMMV

Ditto Mr Timbox god knows how many Bagsters I've fitted this bugger has been the worsed one by the proverbial mile thank heavens for the net because I'd have never got it right 

The biggest irony the trail type bags that fit my 660 and Tiger like the Zeta and R don't fit it's the conventional ones that fit sports tourers that do
