I guess I need a 530 chain with 114 links.  Beyond that, there seems to be a plethora options.  What is good in the below-$100 category.  One friend recommended an RK, but even they have more variants than I can keep track of.

This is the one I have been installing on my own and others bikes . It is a nice quality chain and fits the requirement of less money
order from dennis kirk .com and you get free shipping

and a front sprocket from sprocket specialists
get an 18 tooth #598 for stock gear ratio

you can do the entire chain job with new sprockets for under 200 bucks and it will be oh so smooth feeling again like a new bike !

how about the eternal question: clip on or rivet on master link?

Dr. Mordo

I use the same chain as Mustang, but I got it from Bikebandit for $95 about 6 mos ago.  Now it's $105+$8 for shipping, so Dennis Kirk looks pretty good.  It comes with a rivet link; I had to buy the clip separately.

I don't think there's any disagreement that a rivet link is superior, it's just a pain in the ass.  If you have a chain breaker and can close the rivet I'd use the rivet link.  If you don't, then I'd order a clip link.  I use one, and the only cost is that I check it almost every time I get on the bike.

BTW, if you want to transition to a clip type and don't have a chain breaker, just put a dremel style grinding bit in your drill and grind the rivets off a link of the old chain.  It takes a few minutes, but is cheaper than buying a chain breaker.

another fast and cheap way to remove the old chain is to use a pair of bolt cutters........works like a charm if you have a pair big enough!

2 chains ago on my steamer I used a spring clip master link , thank god the side plate was a press on because when it was time for a new chain in the middle of a road trip the clip was gone . I have no idea when it came off ,I got lucky it could have been disastrous to have the chain fly off or bunch up in the sprocket cover at 75 mph .
Rivet type from now on only for me  !

flux

I don't see a problem with the clip type.  Loctite and safety wire it on; no worries.  Just check it every so often.

Cheers Mustang for sharing that bit of info ( the clip was gone ) that is one of my fears about the spring clip, im waiting on an email from one of my motox, enduro mates to hear if he has ever heard of a clip flying off. im not in any hurry to replace the chain, sprockets but its better to get all the facts early, eh!!

so thats 1 for and 1 against sofar, hmm

Yup, I just ordered a front today from SS.  Hopefully gets here soon enough.  Mine are SHOT.  I ordered the JT rear sprocket from my local Triumph dealer (their good guys), they had a Triumph one in stock for NINETY DOLLARS.  The JT was $55.  I can't believe people buy OEM sometimes.

Two weeks tops but usually much faster !

While you have the chain off is a good time to see how your rub strip and rub block are doing . the bottom side of the rub strip usually goes first and once that's gone swing arm damage starts . and if the rub block is worn down more than 3/8ths of an inch it becomes very hard to adjust the chain properly . if in doubt replace them  !

aeronca

yeah, i was checking them out and they look pretty hammered. i've got some nice 1/2 in thick teflon sheet laying around the hangar, so i might try and fab up an upper and lower out of that. by the way, does bikebandit.com carry new rub strip's?

you will not be able to make a top rub strip  for the bike unless you have access to cnc milling and can make the mold for the injection molding machine and then .......well you get my point !
They are only $26 from bike bandit or your stealer/dealer .
and the bottom rub block is 18 bucks . They are worth it .
