Sprocket recommendation.

Howdy All,

Just took the bike out for a little off road this morning. For a big clumsy bike I think it handled quite well the only problem is that when the going gets slow I needed to keep at least 10 mph to keep the thing going and that can get pretty hairy when it is rocky.

The previous owner added a primary sprocket with 1 or 2 more teeth than the factory original so that he could use it for commuting. At 60-65 mph it is pulling ~3200 rpm in 6th.

I too am going to use it for commuting but I definitely want to do some off road with it on the weekends and I think the set up now is just too high. What is the recommended primary and secondary drive sprocket gearing. I know what the factory originals are but what is the consensus here amongst experienced people.

The stock 18/48 combo is probably your best bet .
a 17 front is nice but it throws the rpm up in the 5500  range at 70mph  in top gear

I'm going to replace my 18 CS sprog with a 17 when the time comes.  5500 rpm is right in the sweet spot!

I run the 17 counter sprocket with the 48 rear and like it for my summer dirt riding.  This last winter I went to the 46 rear and think that it is a great combo with the 17.

I agree with 17/48.  You could even handle 16/48 depending on what speeds you like to commute at??

I run 16/53 on my dirt setup.  Lugs down pretty good in first.  Won't win any speed races out on the highway, though!

Thanks Mustang. I have a 1996 Tiger 900 steamer and they dont have any sprockets listed for my bike. Any ideas. I spoke to the sales department and they dont have any for my year.

Thanks, I am ok with the 17 tooth for the front, but rear stock is 48 would like to get maybe a 51 tooth.

good luck with that ..........there probably isn't too many places making odd ball sprocket sizes for early triumphs

I bet they still have them, but you might have to ask for one that fits the Tiger and something else.  Back in the day I remember calling and they said, 'sorry, we don't have any for the Tiger'...but afterwards I noticed it was in one of the 'all' categories.

What's up with the 'all except' category, anyway?  Does that look right?  Or should that be, 'all including'...
