I just cracked one of mine, can I just unscrew the fitting from the outside, or do I have to remove the plate from the tank?

You HAVE to unscrew it from the fitting side.  If you take the plate off you'll see the fuel lines are part of the fuel plate.

(from the newer fuel pump, but you get the idea)

You have to take off the metal clips first and then unscrew the fittings. One of mine came out complete and the other one sheared off flush with the plate. Got it out by gently tapping in the largest flat bladed screwdriver I could find until it cut a groove and then gently undid it. Luckily came out o.k.
