Removal of Heated Grips

Somewhere a while back there was a post about removing the spade connectors from connector blocks on the heated grip harness.  I searched but I can't find it.

On my 1050, the original owner must of screwed up putting the terminal in the right part of the block because he cut the brown wire on each connector loose and just spliced them together instead.

This is probably fine but it looks like trash and bugs me just knowing it's under the cockpit like that.

I was looking for replacement connectors when I remembered that those terminals can be removed, and I could probably re-use the connectors after finding terminals that fit.

Anyone remember the process?

just cut them off and get some new connectors!

I think to release the pins, there will be a metal tang which holds the metal end inside the connector housing.... I use a long metal pick to press the tab down, then pull the metal connector out of the housing.

If they are similar to any of these, you could get just the pins and reuse the housing.... but if you think you might replace the grips later on, that might be an issue (you'd have to replace the connector again).

here are a few good connectors - I think those wires are 18ga or thinner for the heated grips... I like the 110 connectors.

Nice!  I spent about an hour looking at 2-pin connectors and only found a couple similar to what you posted, but I think I like yours better.

Actually still thinking about these.  Especially since I don't have a decent crimper for non-insulated connectors as of yet, and that one has a nice price.  They also have the 12v light socket I want...

Jim has some neat stuff on his site.... I found it after researching the R/R fix from a few different spots on the internet.... I have done like you did and found a few other types of connectors I needed for various things.

Damn it, those were not it.  They look EXACTLY like that, but the ones on the bike are much smaller (at least the terminal is).

The Eastern Beaver ones are 7.5mm wide, 18-14 AWG terminals.

The Triumph parts are 3.75mm wide, 22-18 AWG (estimate).

The heated grip wires look to be about 22 AWG and the relay wires are about 18AWG, so I might be able to make these work on that end, but I don't think there is anyway I could get a clean crimp on the smaller wires with these terminals.

I could solder on leads, but I don't want to... just seems wrong.   :x

wow this is getting really complicated. Just put some crimp connectors on it and keep riding. Maybe a few wraps of electrical tape for good measure.

If you have a mini torch you should be just fine....

My heated grips are crapping out and I am about to check the harness..
I may hook it up and check the grips.... if it's questionable....

I wondered about that larger size.... I think there is a description about a power socket in there somewhere.... if you look on the back of the power socket on the bike, that is the size of that connector. Figure the grips never need to pull 15 amps.

the .110 connectors aren't the same, but, the wire size is appropriate, so you would be replacing both sides.... only problem is if you needed to replace the grips again, you'd need a new plug.

Might try sending jim an email with a description - maybe he'll know what they are and if he can get them?

Whichever way you decide to go EB try and get plated (or preferrably stainless) terminals. The brass ones will corrode and cause problems down the track.

Guess you've tried looking here http://www.alliedelec.com/  or  http://www.newark.com/ here.  They probably ain't as cheap as others but have a good range as they're the general source of choice for electro pros.

This is really starting to piss me off.  I have the connector shells now, but I can't find pins to fit them.

All the pins I tried from Easternbeaver and others are too large.  These suckers are tiny.  Both in wire gauge and terminal size.

The one on the left is the smallest one he sold.  The one on the right is the original...
