Army boots are not up to it IMHO.  If you go for the old all-leather ones they aren't waterproof and don't have the protection of even the cheapest of bespoke boots.  Later Gortex army boots will be waterproof, but have even les protection.

If you're keeping the cost down (aren't we all??) Aldi and Lidl do bike boots in their special buy sales fairly regularly.

I'm running a pair of Hein Gericke touring boots with speed laces that I've had about 5 yrs now, done over 30k miles and are still 100% waterproof.  Best boots I've ever had,

'pends on exactly what you want them to do other than just keep your feet dry.

TCX (formerly Oxtar) do some excellent boots with waterproof linings at very reasonable prices.
Is it really an adventure bike if its wheels never see dirt?

ourade

I normally only buy Oxtar/TCX boots, and i have never paid full price, there is always an offer on somewhere so shop around they are excellent boots.
I am now wearing Hein Gericke Rally Touring boots which cost £140 in a sale with a member discount, if you compare these boots with the TCX Journey boots which cost £200 it is obvious the only difference is the name.
Cheers Ade.

Most of the time when I ride, I wear a pair of Danners (police boots).  They have nice stiff soles, are comfy and are Goretex so they are waterproof.  The only real drawback to them is they are lace-ups.  If it is wet and muddy, the laces get full of mud and they get messy.  If I am going on an extended to tour, I have a pair of BMW All-round boots.  I wore them to Alaska last year and never once had wet feet.

I just recently bought the Acdrbis Impact X-tight:
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246748

They claim to be water tight, which I haven´t tested yet. Very comfy despite the size, very hard core and lots of protection. In addition they have a quick lock system which makes them easy to put on and off and can be adjusted while riding.

I wouldn´t go trekking in them though...
