Title: Chain Rub?
Post by: Grambo on September 22, 2015, 04:47:41 PM
Not sure about this one, but I seem to be experiencing some kind of rubbing or dragging sound by the chain? I think? tension seems fine, so I am not sure what it is that I am hearing and I cant see the problem when I'm on the bike. Any thoughts? I know it is a bit vague...have driven a shaft drive for the past 20 years.

Have you checked the rubbing strip - item #15 on this diagram? I'm not familiar with your model but there may also be a rubbing block under the bottom chain run...

I have the 2006 model...i think I may have that.
Ill check, but not sure what I am looking for? looking for wear? a break? And is this easily spotted without having to take things apart?

Make sure there's enough 'meat' on the rubbing strip, If its never been changed then there's a possibility the chain has cut through and will then start on the swing arm, the bottom block may also have worn through to its metal bracket.
I think the strip starts off at about 15mm when new so much more than 2/3 through and I would be ordering a new one.

I have checked the plastic chain guide (rubbing strip)? still seems to be in reasonable shape. Not sure if it is original or not? Bout it with 42K on the ticker. I hear it in the lower gears as I am down shifting

Yes I believe that they are. I will check again. Maybe a spring maintenance project replacing them all despite.

I had something similar a while back. Turned out the inside of the sprocket cover was packed full of crud!

Not sure if this ride has ever been off the asphalt, but I will definitely give that a check!!

OK, the team seems to have plenty of play it just seems to be the sound of the chain dragging on the plastic chain guide... Maybe? Is that normal?

I agree with Mustang!!! :bowdown

I have read in the forums here, that these bikes like the chain loose. I recently had my chain too tight and it caused a lot of noise. I loosened mine up more than on street bike and loose like a dirt bike. It made a world of difference. I measured my slack and I can move my chain 1-1/4" up. They seem happier loose.

I can get about an inch or so with gentle persuasion...so i think the tension is ok. i will take the chain guard off and try to inspect the guide and see how it is looking. I may need new sprockets and chain anyway. They are looking a bit tired. Not sure when or if they have ever been replaced and I just turned 43K on the ticker

what happens is when you sit on bike that free play goes away , an inch aint enuff
ideally you need to have someone set the free play at 3/4 inch with your weight on the seat ,

Ill measure it then and see what we come up with. will also inspect the forward sprocket guard for crap. Sprockets are looking a bit tired. Maybe time for a new chain and sprockets but the riding season is quickly coming to a close here in the northeast. My ride in was in the upper 30F's

at over 40k the chain and sprocket had to have been replaced at least once ........................

but yeah a worn chain and sprocket set will make lot's of noise , and I will almost guarantee that the front sprocket is toast

What will a new chain and two new sprockets run me? :icon_cry: Looks like $207 + shipping from Triumph. Anything cheaper out there?

Yes, there is a huge aftermarket out there on chains and sprockets. I would just stick to a nice brand name like JT sprockets. They make a lot of parts for Japanese bikes. Ebay is a good source...

Yes sir, I keep that same link on JT in my favorites. I think you can do a lot better on that pricing. I'm so tight on cash that I squeak when I walk. :augie

Best Chain to get in your opinion? Looks like I can get  the two sprockets off Amazon for about $60 shipped. Thanks  ;)

Before you pull the trigger. You might do a search on these forums about a 19T front sprocket. I just hate to have you not fully informed.

It's not a bad thing. It suppose to be an "upgrade" of sorts. Makes highway riding better with taller gears.

Yes...I am hearing a bit more sluggish to get going and more throttle in the traffic and parking lots. Curious  :icon_wink: But quieter and lower RPM's at cruising speeds?

Still trying to locate the right chain. Amazon says that the Z1R 530/114 doesn't work with my bike...but I'm pretty sure that it does??

Joe's right all along.  I use DID chain but there are other good makes out there too.  The 19T front sprocket only makes a slight difference to acceleration but drops the revs about 600 rpm in top so it really depends on what sort of riding you do and choose based on that.  If you do the airbox mod at the same time you'll not get any drop in acceleration.

Wow...a lot to consider. What is the airbox mod like? I just installed a K&N filter and like the results thus far.

I do a lot of riding in the mountains..we have few straigaways up here to really open her up. I cruise around 60-70MPH regularly...only had her up over 100MPH once or twice and then I run out of room! lol

Not sure I would benefit much from the 19T? Thoughts?

Yea, I would listen to Mustang. He knows New Hampshire and 19T sprocket better than most. :notworthy

If you like the original 18T don't go 19T. This would have been your chance to change.

I agree, 19T makes sense to me because I do a lot of long miles, but on other roads where you're up and down the box a lot, its a waste of time.

looks good , chains are like oil and tires .......everyone has a personal favorite .
Stick with a brand name like your link , or others like RK , EK , DID etc .
stay very far away from the cheap ebay chains , they are not even real m/c chains
