brake caliper measurment

Hi Everyone
How do you measure the distance between the brake caliper eyes. i.e some are 90mm and others 83mm depending on the model.
Is it the distance between the inner edge of the eyes or the centre or the outside............
I think several other models calipers will fit my tiger (1996 laid up for several years? imported to uk 2003).
