spring seats for preload spacers. are they important ?

afternoon all :D im currently puttin my forks back together and im missin the spring seats for the preload spacers.
as i dismantled them everythin got put in little bags. not havin taken em apart before i didnt notice they was missin. my guess is someone in the past hasnt put them in.
ive got some 2.5mm washers that fit and would do the job well. could i use those or have i got to get the proper bit ?

I would hazard a guess that any steel washer that has a diameter that would stop the spacer falling off the spring would do the job.
